Objectives

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Describe the various etiologies and types of hearing impairments.
  2. Recognize the patient with a hearing impairment.
  3. Anticipate accommodations that may be needed in order to properly manage the patient with a hearing impairment.
  4. Describe the various etiologies and types, recognize patients with, and anticipate accommodations that may be needed in order to properly manage each of the following conditions:
    1. visual impairments
    2. speech impairments
    3. obesity
    4. paraplegia/quadriplegia
    5. mental illness
    6. developmentally disabled
    7. Down syndrome
    8. emotional impairment
    9. emotional/mental impairment
  1. Describe, identify possible presenting signs, and anticipate accommodations for the following diseases/illnesses:
    1. arthritis
    2. cancer
    3. cerebral palsy
    4. cystic fibrosis
    5. multiple sclerosis
    6. muscular dystrophy
    7. myasthenia gravis
    8. poliomyelitis
    9. spina bifida
    10. patients with a previous head injury
  1. Define, recognize, and anticipate accommodations needed to properly manage patients who:
    1. are culturally diverse
    2. are terminally ill
    3. have a communicable disease
    4. have a financial impairment
  1. Given several challenged patients, provide the appropriate assessment, management, and transportation.
