Objectives

  1. Apply basic concepts of human growth and development to pharmacology.
  2. Explain how physical, cognitive, and psychomotor development influence pharmacotherapeutics.
  3. Describe physiological changes during pregnancy that may affect the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs.
  4. Describe how the sensitivity of the fetus to drugs changes with gestational age.
  5. Match the five pregnancy categories with their definitions.
  6. Identify techniques that the breastfeeding mother can use to reduce drug exposure to the newborn.
  7. Describe physiological and biochemical changes that occur in the older adult, and how these affect pharmacotherapy.
  8. Discuss the nursing and pharmacological implications associated with each of the following developmental age groups: prenatal, infancy, toddlerhood, preschool, school age, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and older adulthood.
