Internet Society (ISOC): www.isoc.org. ISOC is an international professional membership society providing global coordination while promoting and maintaining a broad spectrum of activities focused on the Internet's development, availability, and associated technologies. Visitors to the site can access news and publications, learn about upcoming conferences, explore the education and training areas, and join or form a local chapter.

The Internet Engineering Task Force: www.ietf.org. This Web site for the subgroup of ISOC focuses on Internet architecture. Visitors can obtain information about the ISOC Working Groups, read about proceedings, and learn more about past and future meetings for this organization.

Internet Architecture Board: www.iab.org. As the advisory body for ISOC and a committee of IETF, this group oversees the Internet Standards Process and protocol parameter registries. Visitors can find information about workshops, view liaison reports, and read meeting minutes from the board’s twice-monthly teleconferences.

ICANN: www.icann.org. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is an international, nonprofit organization that allocates IP addresses and manages top-level domain names. Visitors can sign up for the ICANN newsletter, get the latest information on new top-level domain names, and participate in public forums.

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C): www.w3.org. This international consortium works to establish standards, protocols, and guidelines for the Web and has over one million pages on this site! Perhaps most notably, the W3C works to develop and improve the HTML coding for the Web. Visitors can get the latest information on HTML and XHTML, access technical reports, and visit the newsroom.

WhatIsMyIP.com: www.whatismyip.com. This site provides the IP address for the computer accessing the site and also features a number of search categories.

IP Chicken: www.ipchicken.com. Visit this site to determine your IP address. This site will also display the browser being used.

Yahoo!: www.yahoo.com. This popular site provides a variety of services, including a search engine and subject directory, e-mail services, news, movie reviews, shopping guides, and much more.

Amazon: www.amazon.com. Amazon is one of the largest shopping sites on the Web. Visitors can purchase books, music, movies, jewelry, clothing, and many other items here.

Google: www.google.com. This popular search engine can be used to find resources on the Web.

Microsoft: www.microsoft.com. Microsoft’s home page provides information about its software and products, as well as articles, tips, and resources for technical support.

Mycoolsite: www.Mycoolsite.com AND www.Mycoolsite.org. Both of these URLs are fictitious sites used for demonstration purposes within the chapter.

IANA: Internet Assigned Numbers Authority: www.iana.org. Visit IANA’s site for information about domain name services and IP addressing.

Mozilla Corporation: www.mozilla.org. Home of the Firefox browser, visitors can download the latest version of Firefox, shop in the Mozilla store, learn about Firefox browser extensions ,or access support pages.

ABC.com: www.abc.com. Homepage for the ABC television broadcasting company. Visitors can check local television schedules, get information about ABC shows, see previews of upcoming episodes, join message boards, and shop for show-related merchandise.

ArcadePod.Com: www.arcadepod.com. Visitors to this site can search for and download over 1,000 online games in Java, Flash, or Shockwave formats.

Download.com: www.download.com. Search for software, music, games, and videos on this popular download site.

eBay: www.ebay.com. This consumer-to-consumer site is probably the most popular online auction site around.

XYZ Consulting: www.xyz.com . Set up as fictitious site used for demonstration purposes within this chapter, this link actually leads to the home page for XYZ Consulting.

Chess.com: www.chess.com. Set up as a fictitious site used for demonstration purposes within this chapter, this link leads to a site that promises an online chess community is coming soon.

Internet Archive: www.archive.org. Home of the Wayback Machine, this site archives old Web sites and also collects books, audio, moving images, and software in an attempt to record and maintain historical data.

Juno.com: www.juno.com. Visitors to the Juno Web site can choose between 3 low price dial up Internet access options to meet their budget and personal Internet connection needs. Juno Internet service includes Web e-mail and e-mail virus protection.

Skype: www.skype.com. Visit the Skype site to download free software that will let you use your computer and Internet connection to make free computer-to-computer phone calls anywhere in the world—as long as the person on the other end also uses Skype. To find out if they do, check Skype’s Global User Directory.

LavaRnd: www.lavarnd.org. Explore the FAQs, take a site tour, or view a demo at this random number generator Web site.

SafeMessage: www.safemessage.com. Offering an alternative to e-mail, SafeMessage provides options to keep communications confidential and private. Visitors can try a free evaluation or download additional information about this service.

Wi-Fi Free Spot: www.wififreespot.com. Search for free hotspots by state or country. This site also has pages devoted to hotspots at airports, hotels, and other travel or business destinations, and gives the visitor an opportunity to report new free hotspots, too.
