Chapter 7: Networking and Security...

Web Research Projects

1.

The advent of the computer and the Internet has made possible new types of crime—computer crimes and cybercrime. While it's true that most unauthorized computer access goes undetected and the perpetrators are never brought to justice, many are detected and prosecuted. In this project you will create a presentation about computer and cybercrime.

Research a particular computer crime incident not discussed in this chapter. You may use print media (newspapers and magazines) and the Internet to complete your research. Then create a presentation based on your research which answers the following questions.

 • Who perpetrated the crime?
 • What crime was committed?
 • What were the results of the crime (information loss, financial loss, etc.)?
 • How was the criminal act detected?
 • What were the consequences to the criminal (if any) for committing the crime?
 • What plans does the victim have to prevent future similar crimes?

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

2.

In this project you will learn about online security issues and how you can protect your privacy. The focus of this project will be the security of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. You will then create a report for your instructor detailing the information that you discover.

You will need to visit the Microsoft Internet Security Web site and the. 7 Steps to Personal Computing Security Web page. Make sure your report addresses the following issues.

 • List IE security features and give a brief description of each.
 • Explain how you can check a site's certificate.
 • How can you protect your computer from online viruses?

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.
