This project will provide you with an opportunity to creatively apply some of the skills you've learned in this class to a project you'll work on in a group environment. This project requires planning and cooperation with fellow classmates, similar to what you might encounter if you worked in a large business or even in an educational organization like your school.
The class will be divided into two groups, and each group will select a leader. It is the group leader's responsibility to keep the group members on task and to make sure review deadlines are met. Two students from the class will be selected to coordinate the overall project. They will not be part of either group. Their main responsibility will be to provide assistance to the group leaders.
Instructions:
Audio input and output devices that support speech recognition and speech synthesis are becoming less expensive and more popular. One group will investigate audio as input, and the other will investigate audio as output.
After your group completes its investigation, it will present its findings to the class. You should make sure to do the following things in your presentation:
- Describe the difference between Speech Activation programs and Voice Recognition programs.
- Four of the most popular speech recognition programs are Dragon Naturally Speaking, IBM ViaVoice, L&H Voice Xpress, and Phillips Free Speech. Give a short description of each and designate the one your group would select.
- Describe the Olympus D1000 Digital Voice Recorder and how you could use it as a student and how your instructor could use it to make her/his job easier.
- There are three ways to synthesize soundFM synthesis, wavetable synthesis, and physical modeling. Include a description of each of these.
- Describe expanded stereo and positional audio.
- Describe .USB speakers.
- Describe MIDI and how MIDI makes music. Which is largera MIDI file or a WAV file?
- Answer the following questions: Which sound board would your group choose to add to a new computer? Why?
